Full job description

We’re looking for someone to lead the development and delivery of our new Data Engineering Track. If you have 3-6+ year(s) of professional experience as a Data Scientist or Data Engineer, have excellent communication skills and experience or interest in teaching, we’d love to hear from you.

We are an education B-corp operating in the Hire/Train/Deploy space. At our core is social mobility through exceptional education and high performance careers. Our first clients are BCG, Deloitte, EY and McKinsey, and >80% of our consultants at these firms are top quartile performers (30%-50% are from Free School Meals backgrounds). We have barely scratched the surface. Our impact will only be limited by our execution.

  • What we do? We provide clients with high-performing software, data & cloud consultants as a scalable short term resource and a long term talent pipeline.
  • How we do it? We source and prioritise high-potential graduates from low income backgrounds (Hire), provide exceptional technical & professional training (Train), then employ and support them as consultants to launch high performance careers (Deploy).
  • Why we do it? Our belief that society will be a better place if outcomes are not determined by socio-economic background, but rather by effort, ambition and potential.

The business is founded on two societal failures:

  • Exceptional talent is missed everyday: the common heuristics used to judge graduates mean that outstanding talent is often overlooked. The unfortunate reality is that the greatest barrier to success in the UK is socio-economic background. We are relentless in our pursuit to find, understand and enable potential using a human approach.
  • Exceptional training changes outcomes but is sadly rare: incentives are often not aligned – paid by quantity or government subsidy, rather than outcomes. We place education and support front and centre in our business, challenging ourselves with Benjamin Bloom’s 2 Sigma problem (hence our name). It is impossible that in 10 years a client says to us “we wish your consultants were a little less high performance”, so we know that if we keep investing in education, we win.

The Lead Data Engineering Coach is responsible for leading a cohort of trainees through our Software Fundamentals and Data Engineering course. This includes teaching workshops, coaching underperforming trainees and helping to build and extend our custom built curriculum to ensure that it always up-to-date with industry trends.

Built into this role is a long onboarding process where will work closely with existing coaches to ensure you are feel comfortable and confident in the content and skills needed to be a successful coach.

You will be a key player in influencing the long term outcomes of the individuals that are core to our mission. You will work closely with the Head of Technical Education and Head of Professonalism to ensure the education we provide is top quality.

Day to day the role will involve:

  • Teaching our twice daily workshops (inc tutorials, code reviews, office hours)
  • Regular 1 on 1 coaching/mentoring/support sessions with trainees
  • Helping trainees to catch-up when they fall behind
  • Assessing progress of trainees and providing regular feedback
  • Running technical and non-technical mock interviews with trainees
  • Building our Data Engineering Curriculum
  • Taking your industry knowledge and converting it into problem-based learning approach to coursework that we follow
  • Adding new technology to our curriculum as the discipline develops
  • Running weekly 121s with trainees

  • Education: University isn’t important, but there will be something on your CV to demonstrate intellectual capacity, clarity and ambition
  • Professional: 3-6+ years professional experience in a technical data role (e.g. Data Engineer, Data Scientist, ML Engineer, MLOps, Cloud Engineer)
  • Skills and Experience:
  • Data Engineer: Have built data pipelines in production (e.g. ETL, ELT)

  • Databases: Experience with relational(SQLite, PostgreSQL etc), non-relational (e.g. MongoDB) and data warehouses (redshift, snowflake)

  • Cloud: Solid experience with a Cloud Platform (e.g. AWS, GCP, Azure) and the tools surrounding it (e.g Terraform, DBT, Airflow, Docker, Kubernetes etc)
  • Coaching: Some experience (even if informal) of teaching, training or coaching others.
  • Communication: Excellent communication skills (verbal and written) and confidence when presenting.
  • Temperament: A patient, empathetic & curious attitude
  • Nice to haves (interest or experience in any of):
  • ML: Basic experience with Machine Learning libraries and frameworks (e.g. Pandas, Scikit-learn, Numpy etc)
  • Software Eng: Some experience of web and/or backend software develement (e.g JS, TS, React, Node etc)
  • Teaching: Experience teaching programming to adults; Interest in education best practice (mastery learning, spaced repetition, flipped classrooms, etc)

These are critical to who we are, specific to our business and must be taken together. They are a key part of what we offer – the chance to pursue a meaningful mission alongside a group of people working for each other:

  • Excellence in service of impact: at the core of our business is impact through education. In pursuit of this goal we strive for excellence, recognising also that the work we do is almost always in service of someone else, enabling them to be brilliant. This is about determination, precision, simplicity, and quality. We want to look back in 10 years and say this was the best work we’ve ever done;
  • Thoughtful respect: we understand that the pursuit of excellence is hard, and each of us is a person, not a number. This must be critical to our day to day interactions & our messaging. It means we always show each other the respect to give and receive feedback, and to do so thoughtfully and with humanity.
  • Ownership & leadership: by working here you’re choosing not just to be an owner but also a leader – a role model for others: to take ownership of not only your work but also the mission, and the shared responsibility for performance. It means optimising for the outcome of your team and the business, being deliberate about your impact, and owning mistakes;
  • Continuous improvement: it is imperative we understand what it is that allows us to be excellent, and to build on it so that we can amplify our impact over time. We aim to do this as individuals and as an organisation: having a hyper focus on clear objectives, detailing our thinking and then proactively seeking, giving & listening to feedback on our assumptions & work, and finally having the discipline, courage and determination to improve every day.
