Background and context
As an ambitious and growing specialist global insurer, Hiscox has been investing in creating modern data and analytics capabilities in recent years. The latest milestone in our journey has been the approval of the Group Data Strategy, Target Operating Model and Roadmap.
We are at the very beginning of an exciting journey to set up our Group Data Function to implement our Data Strategy and turn our Data and Analytics capabilities into true growth enablers. One of the key parts of our Group Data Function is the Data and Analytics Centre of Excellence (CoE) with responsibility to define our frameworks, select the appropriate tools and support our Data and Analytics professionals within the Business Unit Data Teams and Group Function Data Team to successfully adopt and implement our group standards.

The Role
The Group Head of Data Science is a critical leadership position in the Data and Analytics CoE and the wider data and analytics team. This role requires the combination of real hands-on experience coupled with a relentless focus on generating real business outcomes. They will play a significant role in creating a value focused Group Data Function with overall responsibility for:
  • Developing Data Science frameworks, technical strategy, and standards for developing and maturing our data science capabilities at group and business unit levels.
  • Identify, evaluate, select and build ML Models when appropriate to solve clearly defined business problems and deliver robust and scalable AI/ML solutions.
  • Building and leading a high calibre team of data scientists at group level
  • Building and setting up data science teams and capabilities within Business Units, and provide functional leadership to data scientists across the group through a matrix organisation set up.
  • Fostering a collaborative culture, promoting innovation, adoption of common approaches and models, reuse of assets and continuous learning and improvement.
  • Designing, training and deploying robust ML models and solutions at scale
  • Defining and putting in place effective MLOps standards, procedures and adoption plan in collaboration with the Group Head of Data Engineering
  • Identifying and implementing effective measures to improve data quality while building models and processes capable of working with poor quality data
  • Playing a key role in evolving and enforcing Group wide AI Governance
  • Guiding and supporting the BU Data Scientists and The Group Functions Data Team to successfully adopt the Data Science frameworks, strategy, standards and tools including compliance with our AI Governance.
  • Clearly communicating and promoting the value of data science practices, adoption of AI/ML solutions at the most senior levels to ensure buy-in and support.
Candidate profile
We seek an accomplished leader who knows what good looks like, has successfully set up and led Data Science teams ideally from scratch, has a strategic mindset with a highly pragmatic approach to identifying and delivering business value through good data science practices.
Experience of a matrix management environment is essential.
The ideal candidate will be a proven change agent who brings leadership, drive and a successful track record of delivering capability uplift within data science and the data and analytics broader organisation.
The successful candidate will possess the following competencies & characteristics:
  • Data Science Leadership: The successful candidate will be an experienced data science leader, someone who has been where we are going. They must have significant demonstrable experience in senior data science positions and have successfully established and led data science capabilities in a global and federated environment including:
    • Setting group wide data science strategy and standards to build scalable and innovative AI/ML models and solutions.
    • Successful value delivering scalable data AI/ML solutions in an iterative manner, driven by business use cases.
    • Selection and roll out of data science frameworks, tooling, governance frameworks.
    • Driving adoption of the data science frameworks, tools, ways of working and governance across multiple business units, data teams and data platforms with varying strategic needs and levels of maturity
    • Developing and implementing plans for growing the maturity of the data science capabilities incrementally
    • Enhancing data literacy and strengthening data culture through incremental and value focused approaches
  • Hands-on experience and technical credibility: Although this is a senior leadership role, the candidate must have strong and up to date hands-on experience in order to successfully shape the role and the data science capability across the group and establish credibility through technical competency within the team and with partners and suppliers.
  • Strategic Delivery: The candidate must have ability for setting medium to long term strategic agenda – in close collaboration with the Business and Data leaders – combined with clear focus on delivering tangible incremental results within a complex, global and rapidly transforming business. The ideal candidate has the ability, determination and tenacity to prioritise and move major initiatives forward, injecting pace and focus, removing blockers while consistently thinking of the bottom-line impact of the efforts.
  • Highly Collaborative Change Agent: Hiscox’s culture requires a highly collaborative approach to change delivery. The successful candidate will be able to break down internal organisational siloes, work collaboratively across Business Units and Functions and constantly balance conflicting demands (supply vs. demand, innovation vs. cost control, stability vs. flexibility, centralisation vs. federation…) in a transparent manner. The candidate must have evidence of strong ability to deliver change through people.
  • Strong Communication and Influencing Skills: The successful candidate will have excellent communication skills. Technically credible in front of the data teams, peers and Execs, able to flex their style to the needs of the audience and distil complexity with ease. Operating in a matrix environment, the successful candidate will have the proven ability to use informal structures, dynamics and organizational culture to get things done. Actively seeking input in decision making and engaging stakeholders to get to the optimal outcome for the Group must come naturally to them and they must have the ability to make difficult and/or unpopular decisions, backed by strong rationale.
