Come and do the kind of computing that got you into technology in the first place. Work with pioneering tech and world-leading scientists and engineers.
At the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC), one of Europe’s premier multidisciplinary research institutions, the expertise of our computing personnel is instrumental in advancing scientific research, both nationally and globally. STFC’s Scientific Computing Department plays a pivotal role on this agenda by pioneering ground breaking software, computing, and data storage infrastructures. In addition to developing innovative solutions, we also leverage the latest technologies to drive applied research, with a primary emphasis on addressing some of the most significant and formidable challenges in the realm of scientific computing. Within STFC Scientific Computing, our AI for Science Theme interfaces with all of STFC’s expansive experimental facilities and their user communities. Our mission involves the application and advancement of pioneering AI and machine learning methodologies to address compelling and intricate scientific problems.
We are currently seeking candidates to fill various roles in Data Science, with a particular focus on those possessing robust backgrounds in ML or data science, as well as computational scientists with relevant expertise in these domains.
About the role:
The overarching goals of the role are to work with our collaborators across various STFC’s experimental facilities to understand their scientific challenges and to develop innovative intelligent solutions. As such, the role involves:
Developing novel techniques to understand, interpret and extract features and knowledge from complex experimental datasets.
Developing ML solutions by working with our collaborators, scientists, and hardware vendors.
Building automated solutions for the experimental facilities underpinned by ML and statistical models.
Contributing to learning and developmental activities at STFC
Supporting the large-scale experimental facilities and relevant communities by presenting and disseminating the work internally and externally.
Publishing the findings in high-quality peer-reviewed journals, conferences, and other venues.
We are looking for ML Engineers and Data Scientists (Both at entry and senior levels) with the following requirements:
Entry Level (Band D):
Strong technical background in one of the following domains coupled with relevant ML skills: computer science, electrical engineering, mathematics, materials science, physics, chemistry, or life sciences with PhD or with equivalent experience.
Strong background or experience in one or more of the following areas:
(a) Using/customising/developing large ML models, such as transformers, (b) using or developing ML techniques for domain-specific tasks (e.g., material sciences), (c) theoretical or applied reinforcement learning, ideally with knowledge in robotics and/or control theory.
Experience in Python (or any other scientific programming languages, such as C++)
Experience in one or more ML frameworks (e.g., PyTorch)
Familiarity with one or more of the following: surrogate models, benchmarking, computational aspects of density functional theory (DFT). Physics informed neural networks (PINNs), or signal processing techniques.
Senior Level (Band E):
In addition to the above, applicants for Band E must demonstrate:
Strong technical and leadership skills with experience on leading, motivating and developing others,
Experience in leading projects demonstrating high quality outputs, and
Evidence of high-quality publications or software or similar disseminations.

We ask some of the biggest questions in the universe, to answer some of the biggest challenges in the world. Together, our scientists, technologists, engineers, and business support team explore the unknown across every field you could think of. And they turn what they find into work that changes the world around us.
What could you achieve with the world-leading facilities and experts of one of Europe’s largest research organisations by your side? Join us and discover what’s possible.
About The Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC)
As one of Europe’s largest research organisations, we ask the biggest questions in the universe to find answers that change the world around us. We seek understanding. We’re proud of the impact we make. And we’re committed to helping build a globally competitive, knowledge-based UK economy. Being part of all this means contributing to work that pushes boundaries and creates possibilities. You’ll work with, and learn from, true experts. Whatever your role, you’ll be free to question, and encouraged to share ideas. And, in a positive and supportive culture, you’ll discover just what a difference you can make when you’re equipped and inspired to excel.
We’re a place where curious minds thrive. Not bound by profit, we explore ideas that others don’t, ask questions that others won’t, and discover answers that others are not equipped to find. And, alongside Mars landings and black holes, we also explore diverse, international projects in everything from science and engineering to computing and technology. Whether it’s at the cutting edge or behind the scenes, our work is intellectually challenging. It’s very often ground-breaking. And it’s endlessly, irresistibly fascinating.
