Pharmaceutical Technology and Development (PT&D) is the organisation that turns brilliant science into medicines that help millions of people. We work across the entire value chain, crafting and delivering active ingredients, formulations and devices for new medicines and providing expert technical support to all AZs commercial drug substances and products to ensure we optimally supply medicines to patients.

 

The recently formed Digital Science organisation, sits within PT&D, where we focus on development of digital strategy, new digital tools and innovative technologies. Working collaboratively with scientific functions, IT and external partners to transform the way they deliver drug development, with members based in Gothenburg, Sweden and Macclesfield UK.

 

Job Description

The ideal candidate will possess a blend of mathematical expertise, computational science skills, strong communication skills and experience of effectively applying data science in a business or scientific environment.

 

This individual will deliver tangible value to the PT&D using statistical analysis, machine learning, AI, LLM, Gen AI and other methodologies across internal and external technical & scientific datasets. You will be able to manipulate and prepare data (structured and unstructured) prior to analysis, develop sophisticated modelling algorithms, present the findings, and bring the insight to life.

The successful candidate will be delivery focused and have strong business analysis & engagement skills to tailor the approach to the business need and context to achieve maximum impact.

 

Key Accountabilities

  • Establishing strong working relationships with the Scientific delivery & project management teams to develop an in-depth understanding of the scientific and business priorities along with their evolving needs
  • Translating unstructured, sophisticated business problems into the appropriate model and algorithm solutions
  • Developing a robust understanding of relevant AZ data sources and their provenance, quality, and structure
  • Working with engineering and architecture to support large scale data preparation, the optimization of analytics platforms and the modernization of confirmed analytics methods
  • Working with suppliers as needed to augment the AZ capability in analytics
  • Undertaking business analysis and business process analysis as part of solution design process
  • Being an active member of the Digital Science team. You will benefit from, and chip in to, our growing bank of Data Science algorithms and work efficiently with our data science workstations. You will get involved in testing and assessing the quality of new tools. It’s also likely you’ll get involved in training provisioning and data science mentorship
  • Developing, maintaining and applying ongoing knowledge and awareness in trends, standard methodology and new developments in analytics and data science

 

Crucial Requirements

  • Scientific background and understanding
  • Expertise in machine learning using unsupervised and supervised methods
  • Knowledge of analytical techniques for deriving knowledge from unstructured text.
  • Use of Data Science Modelling Tools e.g. R, Python, Hadoop, Spark, SAS and Data Science Notebooks (e.g. Jupyter)
  • Experience and knowledge of visualization tools (e.g. R, PowerBI, Spotfire) and ability to tell a story with the data
  • Data manipulation/preparation skills: Eg. SQL, Python, VBA
  • Sufficient knowledge of the pharmaceutical development domain to enable the individual to have credibility with the business and work independently with relevant data sources, systems and tools to enable project progression
  • Ability to explain sophisticated methods and techniques to a non-technical audience

 

Desirable Qualification:

  • Project delivery and Business Analysis experience
  • Influencing and innovation skills
  • Good communication and facilitation skills with the ability to work with others to achieve objectives.
  • Good written and verbal skills, proficient English
